Evil Genius

Wednesday 26th April 2006 (viewed 5400 times)

Evil GeniusI’m a sucker for games, of almost every kind. Board games, cards, chess and of course: Computer games.

The latest one I’ve been trying out, on top of Battle of Wesnoth that I’m still hooked to, is called Evil Genius. I get to play an evil madman who plots for world dominance! I build my own hideout and acquire henchmen, minions and commit acts of infamy to build up my notoriety rating. Of course the pesky forces of good are at large as the worlds nations get more and more angry because of my acts toward them, so they send their agents, infiltrators and troops after me.

The game is easy to play, and reminds me a lot of Dungeon Keeper, except here I don’t build up my lair, or secret hideout on a unspecified island, every time the scenario ends. Instead the hideout keeps growing as I finish off goals and tasks the game presents to me. That confused me, so I started the game over once to make a better layout for my hideout. And of course it’s built underground D

I also get to set up traps for infiltrating agents, which is lot of fun, especially when building combo traps, like a wind machine that blows an agent into a gas trap. Too bad there are so few traps (1 trap that actually kills, the rest confuse or move an agent), but I’m hoping for a wider variety of traps once the game progresses.

So the game is basically lots of fun, especially the music which seems to be a potpurri of Bond movie music. 8) But it has some nagging drawbacks. Agents sometime infiltrate the base by digging themselves into my base, and even though I have security cams set up, and alarms linked to them, if the agents emerge in a room where there are no minions, noone rushes into that room to battle them. I have to direct my henchman (you get a henchman in the beginning, and as the game progresses you’re getting more of them) towards them instead. And that is a lot of manual work.

Also, when adjusting an equippment I’ve placed in an awkward position, I can’t move it to a new position that includes the position where it is currently standing. That is highly annoying! So I have to first move it to a new location and from there move it back to where I wanted it in the first place! But, ah well, the sounds and moves the minions make when interrogating a prisoner are worth the few glitches )

So I give this game a 4 out of 5 as it seems to have a lot of potential! Especially when you get more and more notorious and evil.

Aikido seminar!

Friday 14th April 2006 (viewed 5470 times)

AikidoIt’s time for Easter! And what better way to spend the Easter holidays than training aikido? What? I’m nuts? Ah, yes, I knew that already! Tell me something new! There’s bird poo in my shoes!? Wait a minute… You’re pulling my leg! *goes to check his shoes*

Every two years there is a large Aikido seminar in Sweden called Sverigelägret (Sweden camp; we use the swedish word for camp for our seminars). It brings together aikidokas from all around Sweden. It’ll be 4 days of training with a bunch of different Swedish instructors. 19 instructors and hopefully over 200 participants. Wish it was larger. 2 years ago it was over 300 participants and over 30 instructors, if I remember correctly.

Tons of fun is about to be had! But boy will it hurt after a while… I have to remember to bring my earplugs because some of the aikidokas have very loud nocturnal kiais (snoring).

So I wont be posting in my blog for a couple of days now, you will have to find something else to read!

Battle for Wesnoth

Thursday 13th April 2006 (viewed 8157 times)

Battle for WesnothYes, it’s an online turn-based adventure game! With campaign and multiuser modes. And it’s free! Strangely addictive. Maybe because I get hooked for any game that gives me some mental stimulus for a while. When I know a game through and through and there is no plot to keep my interest up, I rapidly lose my interest in it.

I will make a prediction about this game: I will lose interest in it after a while! There. I’m a bonafide futureteller now! But for now, it has me hooked. Since the campaigns are quite extensive, and I’m a very poor strategic, it will take me a while before I get bored with it. Perhaps I will even learn a little about strategics that will come in handy in other areas of my life?

Tweaking Firefox

Wednesday 12th April 2006 (viewed 8432 times)

I’ve got to admit that since I stopped working with computers it has become more fun to play around with them on my spare time. And since I’m currently unemployed I got lots of spare time!

Surfing the net and getting my bloglines aggregator working has been a real productivity booster when it comes to this area of my life. Some of the things I’ve found I want to share with you. Especially these two pages detailing how to tweak your Firefox to become less memory consuming and having some tips about good plugins to use.

Both pages have descriptions and recommendations for plugins and some tweaking of Firefox. I found a couple of plugins that I myself now use. Wonder how I could live without them!

  • Tab Mix Plus – An excellent plugin to manage your tabs better! You get an X button for each tab, unread tabs marked in cursive red, every tabs progress in loading it’s content marked like in the Fission-plugin and more.
  • Fission – Shows a progressbar in your adressbar for how long it will take the page to load. Invaluable for me, who is a bit impatient of nature D
  • PDF Download – Lets you choose what to do with PDF documents! I’ve been looking for this little baby for a long time. I don’t like my PDF documents to open in a Firefox window.
  • The best for the last – Reveal – A little plugin that lets you view the content of your tabs in cute little miniwindows just by pressing F2, oh and some more, but that functionality in it self was worth the download!

And my favourite tweaking of Firefox and it’s memory usage:

  1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
  2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
  3. In the box that pops up enter config.trim_on_minimize. Press Enter.
  4. Now select True and then press Enter.
  5. Restart Firefox.

When I minimize Firefox it drops down to 10 MB of used memory! Mmmm! *cuddles with the tweak*

Aikido doh’s

Tuesday 11th April 2006 (viewed 6753 times)

I try to keep up with different aikido forums around the world using Bloglines as an aggregator for all the RSS-feeds. Today I ran into a funny thread from the AikiWeb about Aikido doh’s, funny things that you or others have done regarding Aikido.

If you train aikido, or other martial arts with pinning techniques, you’re familiar with ‘Tapping out’. That is, hitting the mat or something else with your hand to signal to your partner that it’s enough, you can feel the pain and give up. Well, one of the funniest doh’s I ran into was this one:

Only last Monday I went to see a dentist. I was in the chair in horizontal position; and when the pain came on … I tapped out.

Oh the laughter I had at the image of that!

Here’s a link to the thread. Enjoy D

Ready for the world?

Monday 10th April 2006 (viewed 13047 times)

Soon I think me little blog will be ready to take on the onslaught of the world! Some things I still have left to fix:

  1. Install a web traffic analyzer of some kind (PMetrics? Google analytics?) (Google analytics it is!)
  2. Implement Gravatars in comments
  3. Register my blog on Technocrati
  4. Replace my homepage with the blog, make the right RewriteRules for my .htaccess.
  5. Update the first page of the blog to be a “homey”-version, with info about me, link to swedish page (for those unlucky souls who don’t read english), pictures and suchs.
  6. Look into implementing Brians Threaded Comments with my theme. (skipped this!)
  7. Check out if there are better WYSIWYG-editors out there that I want to use. (nope, gonna stick with the default!)
  8. Figure out how to implementing a ‘Unread posts/comments’-page. (Moved to another post)
  9. Fixing swedish characters on the main page.
  10. Rethink if I really want to use Technocrati tags on my page. (Moved to another post)

That’s it, I think! When I’ve done these things my blog should be up and running!

Widget for Simple Recent Comments

Friday 7th April 2006 (viewed 137074 times)

Cheesus! I was up till 7 am yesterday, playing around with wordpress. It’s like a drug! I spent several hours learning how to make a widget out of the module Simple Recent Comments written by Raoul. He also kindly offered to link to my site if I put up the widget on my homepage.

So here it is! To use it, you have to install the widget-plugin from wordpress.

Requirements: Wordpress 2.x

Here’s how you install it:

  1. Make sure you have the widget-plugin from wordpress installed.
  2. Download the file and unzip it.
  3. Place the widget_simple_recent_comments.php in your wp-content/plugins/widgets directory.
  4. Go to your administration panel and activate the widget.
  5. Go to the widget administration panel in Presentation and drag’n'drop the little rascal onto your sidebar. You can also change the settings for the plugin there.

Simple as that D

UPDATE 2006-05-03: Raoul made some changes to his code to allow the use of non-standard table names for wordpress. I’ve included his fix in version 0.2.1!

UPDATE 2006-05-04: I got a report that an error is returned if there are no comments. Fixed it in version 0.2.2. Thanks to anshul!

UPDATE 2006-09-06: Paul Hampson reported that if the title contained HTML-elements, the html would be displayed in the hover text of the link to the post in the comment. This is fixed in version 0.2.3. Thanks Paul!

Thank you, brain!

Friday 7th April 2006 (viewed 6780 times)

I’ve got a habit of beating myself up for things I forget, and remember later. What I’m saying to myself is something like this:

How could I forget that? It was on my mind all day that time, and now it’s been gone for several weeks, and it was important! And I remember it now? Am I stupid, or what?

That is a brilliant example of Not So Creative Thinking! I’ve first told my brain that the thing I was thinking about was important. And when it gets to the task of reminding me about it, I start to beat it up. What will it learn from this?

If I remind him of things, I will be beaten up!

Will this increase the chanses of my brain reminding me about things when they pop up? Most likely not! Surprised?

So, I’ve tried to install a new way for me to please my brain once it gets where I wanted it to be in the first place. I say to myself, mentally:

Thank you, brain!

and try to feel gratitude towards myself and my brain for delivering to me what I once asked for! That will increase the chanse of it doing a better job in the future, and I dont have to beat myself up for it!

It also reminds me of starting with Getting Things Done again, to try to create a system outside of my mind that keeps track of things I wish to have focus on. More about that later, when I’ve finished configuring my blog. )
